Understanding Your Part-D Costs

The cost of Medicare Part D involves more than just the monthly premium. Depending on the plan and medications you take, your costs may include a monthly premium, annual deductible, copayments or coinsurance.

Prescription drugs are generally placed into different formulary tiers, and what you pay can vary based on the medication, its tier and the pharmacy you use.

In 2026, your out-of-pocket costs for covered Part D drugs are capped at $2,100. Once you reach that amount, you pay $0 for covered Part D drugs for the remainder of the calendar year.

Comparing total estimated annual costs—not simply the premium—is an important part of choosing a Part D plan.

Important To Know

Don't overlook Part D coverage just because you don't take many medications today.

If you go 63 consecutive days or more without Part D or other creditable prescription drug coverage after you're eligible, you may have to pay a late-enrollment penalty if you enroll later.

That penalty can continue for as long as you have Medicare drug coverage.
